This is shaping up to be the worst flu season in decades and will probably kill more than 100,000 people.

There is already a major outbreak in Pennsylvania, the only state in the Northeast which has been hard hit.

You can see a current flu epidemic outbreak map at:
http://www.wunderground.com/US/Region/US/2xFlu.html

There is no real treatment for the flu, it is a virus and antibiotics have absolutely NO affect on it.

We are adding a special page just for flu coverage.

According to a consumer report heard on the December 03 NBC Today Show, gift debit cards, which are like gift certificates but actually contain ready-to-spend case in the form of a debit card, have a number of shortcomings.

First, never buy one online, there is often a big additional fee so only buy them in person at the store or mall.

Many cards have dormancy fees, that is, they reduce in value by several $$ each month until they completely expire. Use it fast or loose it!

There are expiration dates on some so the person you give them to looses all the money eventually anyway.

About 10 percent of cards are never redeemed, about $5 Billion each year, which is why the stores are pushing them so hard.

Spirit Owner (former? Current? Future?) Under SEC Cloud

The Hollinger International Publishing Group, which recently purchased The Spirit, is under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission for allegedly illegal payments to former executives including Conrad Black.

Here's the link to an Australian story on this:

http://finance.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,7921857%255E462,00.html

"Black is a Canadian-born British press baron who controls The Daily Telegraph, the Chicago Sun-Times and Jerusalem Post, resigned his key executive posts in November. David Radler, the publisher of The Sun-Times and Hollinger's chief operating officer, was also ousted by the Hollinger board. Black and his lieutenants are said to have pocketed $32.1 million in payments that had not been approved by the board of the publicly owned company."

a look at the scandal from GB's Guardian Business report:

The Spirit itself is not connected with any of these reports, it was simply purchased by the Hollinger Group.

Mad Cow
Mad Cow or BSE

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is a chronic, degenerative disorder affecting the central nervous system of cattle. It is fatal in cattle or humans.

Risk Level  incredibly low  England had hundreds of thousands of dead cows from this and less than 200 human deaths. We have one reported case (probably a few hundred tops.) In perspective  about 100,000 people will probably die of the flu this year in the U.S.

Absolute safety - Even if you are eating a dead mad cow  simply eat only whole cuts of meat, roasts, steaks, no beef sausage, hmbg, etc. because Mad Cow can ONLY be transmitted by central nervous system material.

Near absolute safety - Eat hamburger too, but only from butchers who don't use expensive mechanical meat processing equipment.

The Mad Cow threat is far less than the danger of eating in the average restaurant or from eating rare hamburgers from anywhere.

The Consumer Federation of Am is currently providing the most honest  and balanced coverage of this threat.

The beef industry has blocked all attempts to legislate the minor changes necessary to have prevented this threat. When you read my report bear in mind that I am an organic rancher who has raised beef cattle so I'm not picking on the beef industry, just on the stupidity of some of the biggest commercial operations which have caused this problem.
